Eli’s Reviews; 9.5.12 – Searchlight Song Competition winner for September Sky Nelson

By Eli Chastain
Sky Nelson, the September winner of the Searchlight songwriting competition, brings listeners into the world of his original compositions via his earliest musical memories, which land on polar opposite ends of the spectrum; the Suzuki method of environmental musical learning, and of course, the Beatles.  Nelson, who was born and lives in California, lent his young ears to both improvised piano records,
and the harmonies in the intro of Help! Both influences create a thread that runs throughout his musical journey.Host and producer Rich Reardin gives Nelson the green light to delve deep into the evolution of his career as he learned to balance the common dilemma facing most independent artists; working on the craft and creating music full time, and keeping the lights on by working in a field that pays, but never satiates. As the conversation unfolds, Nelson discusses his spiritual beliefs and outlook, and how those pieces provided him the opportunities he sought to not only find the work/creative balance, but how those experiences intrinsically shaped the music he decided to write; which ultimately made him the September winner. Sky notes that he became interested in Physics, became a teacher, and how all  that influenced his spirituality, and music as well.

The song, titled ‘Live In Love’, acts as a perfect glue between Nelsons’ earliest influences. A mid tempo manifesto with production techniques that tip it’s hat to the slick and tame pop of the 80’s, the song is forward thinking and actually serves to encapsulate the conversation, and the depth Nelson is able to bring to light throughout his time in the Searchlight spotlight.
